THE THING is a subscription based, mail order, art project where artists, writers, filmmakers and musicians will be invited to create a household object that somehow incorporates text. Every three months a new object will be hand wrapped in brown paper package and string by the editors ( Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan ) and mailed to subscribers. The first four artists involved in the project will be Miranda July ( Issue 1 ), Anne Walsh ( Issue 2 ), Kota Ezawa ( Issue 3 ), and Trisha Donnelly ( Issue 4 ).

Will and I began talking about this project while we were in grad school at Berkeley. We were both (and still are) very interested in the intersection of objects and text. And we wanted to create an avenue where we could make this happen on a larger level and somehow get them into people’s houses. The result is something like a cross between a publication and an art project.
